The A9 motorway in Germany

The A9 motorway begins in Potsdam and runs south to Munich, passing through Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Bavaria.
The route is approximately 530 km long and carries heavy goods traffic, both domestic and in transit. The LKW-Maut toll system applies along the entire length of the A9 to vehicles with a technically permissible maximum laden mass of more than 3.5 tonnes.

Main sections of the A9 motorway

The A9 motorway runs from north to south across Germany, connecting Potsdam and the Berlin area with Munich. The route passes through regions with heavy lorry traffic and links key industrial and logistics centres. The most important sections of the A9 are:

  • Potsdam — Berlin
The northern section serving traffic heading towards the capital and surrounding distribution centres.
  • Berlin — Leipzig
A transit section through Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt, vital for domestic and international freight transport.
  • Leipzig — Nuremberg
The central section, linking eastern Germany with Bavaria and playing a crucial role in long-distance transport.
  • Nuremberg — Munich
The southern section, providing access to Bavaria and southern Europe and used by lorries for both transit and regional transport.
